Planning on Quitting Your Job? 8 Things to Include on Your Resignation Checklist

Are you finally ready to pull the plug and leave that job?

Then you’ve got to get your ducks in a row so that you can set yourself up for success. If you’re not sure how to go about leaving your job or what should be your next steps, we’ve got you. Here’s a list of action items to make your exit as graceful as possible:

1. Figure out your next moves.

Will you be finding a new job? Or taking some time to make your next career moves? Make a plan before you tell your boss you’re leaving.

2. Save your stuff.

Having a portfolio is always great for helping you land your next gig, so be sure to save all your projects to your personal folders.

3. Write your exit script.

It’s normal to be nervous about telling your boss you’re moving on, so write down what you want to say to avoid getting off track or forgetting anything.

4. Wipe your work devices clean.

Yeah…no one needs to know if you were online shopping on the clock, so say bye-bye to that browsing history!

5. Schedule a time to tell your boss.

Reach out to your boss about setting up a time to meet, and when you do, use your script and be prepared for them to counteroffer or wish you farewell.

6. Thank the people who’ve helped you.

Burning bridges is never a good idea, no matter how bad the job was, so say thanks to those who’ve supported you at your old job.

7. Figure out your benefits.

Set up a meeting with HR to get clear about when your health insurance plans will end, and start the process of rolling over your retirement account.

8. Make time for rest.

Quitting a job can be stressful, and it can really take a toll on your emotional and mental health. So throughout the process, and when it’s all said and done, make time to take care of yourself.

Above all, remind yourself that things are going to be okay. You just have to see it through.
